OIL WILL NOT DIE-AFMAN PRESIDENT

As European countries are preparing  to phase out fossil fuel powered machines, in automobiles and industrial Plants, by 2045, Dr. Thomas Ogungbangbe, Aviation Fuel Marketers (AFMAN) President says fossil fuel, i.e. Oil, will not die.

Speaking exclusively to ENB, he says Fossil Fuel, as has been the case in decades of its rise, will continue to reinvent itself.

“Oil will not die. If you look at the evolution of Oil, just when you thought it would die, another would resurrect. It has always been one miraculous escape from total obsolescence. In the beginning and for decades, we had a situation in which Kerosene was the only convertible product…”

It was the major one. There was also Grease. According to him, this was how Rockefeller made his money. “That was where all the major oil companies came out from. It was at this time Rockefeller went to populous nations, such as  China, distributing Lanterns to them. “So, since you have Lantern already, you would need light and if you must have light you need Kerosene. He was busy selling everywhere in the world.” This was how kerosene became the Household hydrocarbon product that powered homes with light.

Unfortunately, the life of Kerosene would soon be shortened as inventions began to erode its relevance. “However, Thomas Edison came to rock his boat by inventing incandescent Lamp. All you need to do is to turn on the switch and there would be light, you didn’t need kerosene.”

That was a major revolution which was projected, at the time, to bury kerosene into extinction. “It was at that point that commercial jet started. Today, Household kerosene is not being used anywhere in the Northern part of the world. It is only found in some places in the Southern part of the world. I can even tell you, as we speak today, kerosene is no longer an issue even in countries such as Ghana…”

According to the AFMAN President, over 80 % of Ghanaians are on Gas that is mainly supplied from Nigeria.

has stated that kerosene should be produced or imported in colored form to differentiate it from the variant used in the Aviation industry known as Jet A1 Fuel.

Dr. Ogungbangbe, who is also the Aviation Fuel Marketers (AFMAN) President, while most countries are going away from Household kerosene, those where the consumption is still in existence are expected to create a situation in which the two Products can be distinguished from each other.

In this regard, Dr. Ogungbangbe informed that his association has advised the Federal Government of Nigeria to color the Household Kerosene known as HHK so as to differentiate it from the Aviation fuel known as Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK). “You can differentiate aviation turbine kerosene from House hold kerosene by adding colorant. It’s just putting the color. For instance, everybody knows HHK would come in green or red or blue… while the ATK is clear and bright. That’s a simple thing to do. It is done in India, for example, to differentiate so that you don’t have this one entering into this market.”

Although, the CITA Chairman affirmed that the advice is still being considered by the government, it is hoped that in order to effectively demarcate the two product one from the other, government should take steps to actualize the wise counsel given it by the Aviation Fuel Marketers.
